Beginner Trails
1. Mount Takao (高尾山), Tokyo
The most popular day hike near Tokyo. Multiple routes to the 599m summit, with a cable car for the lazy. Beer garden at the top in summer. 2–3 hours round trip.2. Kurama to Kibune (鞍馬〜貴船), Kyoto
A lovely forest trail connecting two charming villages north of Kyoto. Visit Kurama Temple, hike through ancient cedar forests, then soak in an onsen and eat kawadoko (riverside dining) in Kibune. 2 hours.3. Kamikochi (上高地), Nagano
A flat, easy walk through a stunning alpine valley in the Japanese Alps. Crystal-clear rivers, mountain views, and well-maintained boardwalks. Accessible by bus only (no private cars).Intermediate Trails
4. Mount Daibosatsu (大菩薩嶺), Yamanashi
A beautiful ridge walk with panoramic views of Mount Fuji. The approach through beech forests is gorgeous in autumn. 4–5 hours round trip.5. Mount Shibutsu (至仏山), Gunma
Overlooks the Ozegahara marshland — one of Japan's most beautiful highland wetlands. Best visited in summer when the nikko-kisuge wildflowers bloom. 6–7 hours.6. Yakushima (屋久島), Kagoshima
The ancient cedar forest that inspired Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. The Jomon Sugi trail to a 7,000-year-old cedar tree is an unforgettable experience. Full-day hike (10+ hours).Advanced Trails
7. Mount Fuji (富士山)
Japan's iconic 3,776m peak. The most popular route (Yoshida Trail) takes 5–7 hours up, 3–4 hours down. The sunrise from the summit (goraiko) is a bucket-list experience. Season: July–early September only.8. Mount Aso (阿蘇山), Kumamoto
The world's largest volcanic caldera. Hike to the active crater for dramatic views of steaming volcanic vents and the vast grassland caldera. Check eruption status before going.9. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, Toyama
A spectacular multi-transport mountain crossing featuring the famous 20m "snow corridor" walls in spring. Combine with hiking in the Murodo area (2,450m).10. Kumano Kodo, Wakayama/Mie
The UNESCO World Heritage ancient pilgrimage trail through forested mountains. Multiple routes from 1–5 days. One of only two UNESCO pilgrimage routes in the world (alongside the Camino de Santiago).Hiking Tips for Japan
- Mountain huts (山小屋): Book in advance during summer season
- Bears: Carry a bear bell in Hokkaido and northern Honshu
- Weather: Mountain weather changes fast — bring rain gear always
- Transport: Many trailheads accessible by public bus + train
- Onsen: Many hiking areas have hot springs nearby — bring a towel!
- Leave no trace: Carry all trash out with you
