Best Beaches in Japan: Sun, Sand & Hidden Gems

Gaido Japan8 min read

Most people don't associate Japan with beach culture, but with over 6,800 islands and nearly 30,000 km of coastline, Japan has some truly spectacular beaches — from tropical paradise in Okinawa to dramatic rocky coves on the mainland.

Okinawa & Southern Islands

1. Nishihama Beach, Hateruma Island

The southernmost inhabited island in Japan. Crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand, and virtually no crowds. Feels like you've left Japan entirely.

2. Kondoi Beach, Taketomi Island

A shallow, calm bay with impossibly clear water. Perfect for families. The island itself is a beautifully preserved Ryukyu village.

3. Sunayama Beach, Miyako Island

Famous for its natural rock arch framing the white sand beach and turquoise sea. One of the most photogenic beaches in Japan.

Mainland Japan

4. Enoshima Beach, Kanagawa

Tokyo's closest beach getaway, just 1 hour from Shinjuku. Popular for surfing, summer festivals, and views of Mount Fuji on clear days.

5. Shirahama Beach, Wakayama

The white sand was actually imported from Australia! One of Japan's oldest resort beaches with hot springs nearby. Popular with Kansai day-trippers.

6. Miho no Matsubara, Shizuoka

A UNESCO World Heritage pine-tree-lined beach with iconic views of Mount Fuji across Suruga Bay. More scenic than swimming-focused.

Northern Japan

7. Jodogahama Beach, Iwate

Dramatic white rock formations jutting out of emerald green water. The name means "Pure Land Beach" — and it lives up to it.

8. Amami Oshima, Kagoshima

A subtropical island between Kyushu and Okinawa with pristine beaches, mangrove forests, and excellent diving. Less touristy than Okinawa.

Beach Tips for Japan

  • Swimming season: July–August (beach houses/showers open)
  • Jellyfish warning: Box jellyfish appear August–September in warmer waters
  • Beach houses (海の家): Seasonal restaurants and changing facilities on popular beaches
  • Nudity: Not permitted on any public beaches
  • BBQ: Only allowed in designated areas
  • Getting there: Many great beaches are accessible by train + short bus ride
Japan's beaches offer something for everyone — whether you want tropical snorkeling in Okinawa, surfing near Tokyo, or dramatic scenery up north.
