Yamaguchi Gion Matsuri

The Kyoto of the area, Yamaguchi was modeled after the beautiful city and it’s no surprise it has a similar festival. When the Yasaka shrine was brought from Kyoto and the spirit of the deity implanted during the Kanjo ceremony, the Yamaguchi Yasaka shrine was formed. One of the main attractions of the festival is the “Dance of the Heron” which marks the beginning of the celebration. The elegant dance is performed wearing heron costumes and is classed as a Folk Cultural Property by the prefecture. There is a large dance performance involving the residents of the city and a mikoshi procession takes place.
The festival takes place on the same three days every year: the 20th, 24th, and 27th of July.
