Described by Lonely Planet as Japan’s Olympics of fireworks, the Omagari Hanabi has a history spanning more than a century. The best pyrotechnicians from around the country gather in the city of Daisen, Akita Prefecture, to show off their skills with an array of incredible firework displays set to music. The overall winner of the event receives the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, which is only given at one other fireworks event – the Tsuchiura Fireworks Festival in Ibaraki. The event draws in hundreds of thousands of spectators each year, so anticipate crowds if you plan to attend.
