A ten-day event taking place in Nara, the Tokae sees thousands of candles placed in varying displays and patterns. The shapes include rivers, deer, and hearts and some lanterns are used to illuminate the structures of the area. They have recently improved the eco-friendly status of the event, switching from paraffin candles to natural versions – partly for the environment and partly to protect curious deer. The opening ceremony will take place from 6.45 pm – 7 pm beside the pond on the East side of the Ukumo Garden. There will be music performed by local artists throughout the event and there will be pop-up cafes and entertainment too.
