Akita Kanto Festival

Kanto (not related to the region of the same name) are poles that are approximately 15 meters long from which hang 46 lanterns – intended to resemble bags of rice.
Weighing up to 50kg, the festival performers balance these poles on their forehead or lower backs while walking the parade route. They are accompanied by bands of bamboo flute players and are urged on by the spectators.
As you can probably imagine, balancing a 15-meter-long pole that weighs 50kg while walking is quite a feat – especially if there is a breeze!
Pro tip: Book your accommodation, together with a viewing seat, in advance.
